Jeffrey Sachs Warns of US-Israel "Hybrid War" and Risk of Attack on Iran

In a recent interview on the IranTalks podcast, recorded for Iranian national television, renowned economist and policy expert Professor Jeffrey Sachs provided a stark analysis of the escalating tensions with Iran. He framed the current situation not as spontaneous internal unrest but as a deliberate, long-term campaign by the United States and Israel to achieve regime change in Tehran.
Professor Sachs asserted there is "no doubt" that Israel has pursued this goal for years and that the U.S. has participated in a coordinated effort. He described a strategy of "hybrid warfare" where covert operations, economic pressure, and media narratives are combined to create instability. A central pillar of this, according to Sachs, is the U.S. policy of "maximum pressure," employing unilateral sanctions to "crush the Iranian economy" and currency. He argued these measures violate international law and the UN Charter, as they are designed to inflict economic distress rather than resolve disputes.
Sachs was sceptical of interpreting day-to-day diplomatic statements, noting that last summer an Israeli bombing occurred just before planned US-Iran negotiations. He suggested the underlying goal of both nations is to maintain relentless pressure, with Israel actively trying to "induce the United States to attack Iran." When asked how Iran should respond, Sachs advised the country to rally international partners, particularly within the BRICS bloc, to challenge the legality of the sanctions and counteract the economic warfare. He emphasised that Western media narratives often omit the root cause of Iran's crises, instead propagating a government-led explanation that ignores the external pressure.
