US Grants India Waiver to Buy Russian Oil as Energy Crisis Deepens

On the World Affairs In Context (@lenapetrova) YouTube channel, the host analysed the United States' recent decision to grant India a temporary waiver allowing imports of Russian crude oil, interpreting the move as a sign of increasing tension in global energy markets amid the escalating Iran conflict.

The video noted that just weeks after Washington pressured India to reduce Russian oil purchases, the Treasury Department issued a 30-day licence permitting Indian refiners to accept cargoes loaded onto vessels before 5 March. The waiver, expiring on 4 April, allows transactions provided the oil is delivered to and bought by Indian companies.

The analysis linked this reversal to disruptions in the Persian Gulf following US-Israeli strikes on Iran. With the Strait of Hormuz—through which approximately 20 million barrels per day pass—becoming increasingly volatile, oil flows from major producers like Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and the UAE face growing uncertainty. Crude oil prices reached approximately $92 per barrel, and US retail gasoline rose to $3.32 per gallon.

India, the world's third-largest crude importer, is particularly vulnerable, relying on foreign supplies for about 5 million barrels daily, roughly half of which transit the Strait of Hormuz. Some Indian refiners have reportedly reduced operations due to low stockpiles. The host argued that the waiver demonstrates the limits of US economic coercion when energy security is at risk, noting that sanctions are not based on international law and that India could, in theory, purchase freely, but Washington imposes costs to discourage such trade.

The analysis suggested that while the waiver might temporarily calm markets, it does not address fundamental supply disruptions. It warned that if Persian Gulf tensions persist, governments may need further emergency measures, and the episode could signal a lasting shift, with energy security taking precedence over geopolitical objectives during acute supply crises.
