Lt Col Davis: Iran Aims to Bleed US Dry in War of Attrition

In an analysis published on his Daniel Davis / Deep Dive (@DanielDavisDeepDive) YouTube channel, retired Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Davis examined the evolving military dynamics of the Iran conflict, arguing that Tehran has adopted a deliberate strategy to outlast the United States through a protracted war of attrition.

Davis contended that US war aims, particularly President Trump's stated demand for "unconditional surrender," are militarily unattainable without a massive ground invasion— a prospect he deemed unrealistic given current force levels and Iran's size, terrain, and prepared defences. He noted that Iran has spent decades constructing dispersed, underground "missile cities" designed to survive sustained bombardment and maintain a retaliatory capability.

The analyst highlighted the growing strain on US military resources, pointing to reports of interceptor missile shortages and Patriot battery losses. He warned that maintaining the current operational tempo risks depleting munitions inventories to levels that could leave US forces vulnerable elsewhere globally.

Davis expressed concern about the conflict expanding into new domains, such as attacks on desalination plants—infrastructure on which US Gulf allies are critically dependent. He suggested Iran could exploit this vulnerability to increase pressure on regional partners hosting US bases.

Drawing historical comparisons to Vietnam and Afghanistan, Davis argued that superior firepower does not guarantee strategic victory when an adversary possesses stronger political will. He pointed to the controversy over the strike on an Iranian girls' school, which US analysis reportedly attributed to American forces, as an example of information warfare dynamics that could erode domestic and international support for the war.

Assessing US options, Davis described them as uniformly unfavourable: escalate further, potentially including nuclear use; de-escalate through "verbal gymnastics" to declare victory; or pursue a ground invasion with catastrophic costs. He noted that administration statements suggesting disinterest in a negotiated settlement make the least damaging path more difficult, pointing towards prolonged conflict.
