Greta Thunberg Detained by UK Police at Pro-Palestinian Protest

British police have detained climate activist Greta Thunberg during a pro-Palestinian protest in London, drawing international attention and renewed debate over protest policing in the UK.

The detention occurred at a demonstration held in support of hunger strikers linked to Palestine Action, a group campaigning against companies it says are connected to Israel’s defence sector. Video footage showed officers escorting Thunberg away from the protest area as police enforced restrictions on the gathering.

Police said the protest had breached conditions imposed to prevent disruption and ensure public safety. Officers cited public order powers and referenced provisions of the Terrorism Act when carrying out the detention. Several other protesters were also detained during the operation.

The demonstration formed part of a wider campaign opposing Israel’s military actions in Gaza and calling for an end to UK involvement with firms linked to Israeli defence activities. Thunberg has increasingly aligned herself with pro-Palestinian activism, framing the issue as one of human rights and global justice.

Authorities later confirmed that Thunberg was released without charge, with inquiries ongoing. The Metropolitan Police said enforcement action was based solely on compliance with protest regulations, not the political views expressed.

The incident has intensified debate in the United Kingdom over the balance between public order, free expression, and the use of terrorism-related legislation in policing demonstrations.
