Denmark to Summon US Ambassador Over Trump’s Greenland Envoy Appointment

Denmark has announced it will summon the US ambassador in Copenhagen following former US President Donald Trump’s decision to appoint a special envoy to Greenland, a move Danish officials say raises serious diplomatic concerns.

The appointment of Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as Greenland envoy has been interpreted in Copenhagen as an escalation in Washington’s unilateral engagement with the Arctic island, which is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.

Denmark’s foreign ministry said it would seek clarification from the United States Government regarding the scope and intent of the envoy’s mandate. Officials stressed that any diplomatic engagement with Greenland must respect its constitutional status and existing agreements with Denmark.

The move has revived memories of Trump’s past remarks suggesting the US should acquire Greenland, comments that were firmly rejected by Danish leaders at the time. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has previously stated that Greenland “is not for sale” and warned against rhetoric that undermines sovereignty.

Greenlandic officials have also emphasized their right to self-determination, noting that while cooperation with international partners is welcome, decisions about the territory’s future rest with its people.

The diplomatic dispute underscores growing tensions over Arctic geopolitics, as melting ice opens new shipping routes and access to natural resources, intensifying competition among global powers.
