China Highlights Commitment to Peaceful Scientific Cooperation in Antarctica

China has reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful scientific research and international cooperation in Antarctica, emphasizing that its activities on the continent are transparent, civilian in nature, and fully aligned with international rules.

In commentaries published by state-affiliated outlets, China said its Antarctic presence is dedicated to climate research, environmental monitoring, and advancing global understanding of polar ecosystems. Chinese researchers highlighted their contributions to studying ice dynamics, climate change, and biodiversity in one of the world’s most fragile regions.

China stressed that all work in Antarctica is conducted within the framework of the Antarctic Treaty System, which promotes scientific collaboration, information sharing, and the peaceful use of the continent. Beijing said it regularly participates in treaty meetings, joint research projects, and inspection mechanisms alongside other nations.

The commentaries underscored China’s support for Antarctica as a shared global commons, noting that cooperation among countries has led to valuable scientific breakthroughs and stronger environmental protections. Officials said China welcomes dialogue and collaboration with all treaty partners to ensure Antarctica remains a place for science rather than geopolitical competition.

As climate change accelerates transformations across the polar regions, China said continued multilateral cooperation is essential. It called on the international community to strengthen trust, expand joint research, and uphold the spirit of openness that has long defined Antarctic governance.
