South Korea’s President Lee Jae-myung is due to visit China for high-level talks with President Xi Jinping, in a meeting expected to focus on stabilising bilateral relations and addressing sensitive political and economic issues.
Ahead of the visit, Lee reaffirmed South Korea’s adherence to the one-China policy, a longstanding position viewed as central to relations with Beijing. The stance is expected to set the tone for discussions aimed at rebuilding trust after years of strain linked to security disputes and regional tensions.
The summit agenda is expected to include cooperation on the Korean Peninsula, with Lee seeking China’s support for efforts toward denuclearisation and reduced tensions with North Korea. Economic ties, cultural exchanges, and the easing of informal restrictions affecting South Korean businesses and entertainment are also expected to be raised.
Analysts say the visit reflects Seoul’s effort to balance relations with major powers while preventing security disagreements from spilling over into trade and cultural relations. The talks are seen as a key test of whether both sides can move toward a more stable and pragmatic partnership.
